ROME, FEB. 22, 2006 (Zenit.org).- Bishop Joseph Zen Ze-kiun of Hong Kong, one of 15 named to be the Church's newest cardinals, expressed gratitude over Benedict XVI's choice.
"We are really grateful to the Holy Father because among such a small number of new cardinals, he wanted to nominate one Chinese," Bishop Zen told Vatican Radio today.
"This is a sign of special benevolence to the Chinese people," the 74-year-old prelate said. "Here is the Holy Father who wants to show his special love for the Chinese people.
"For our part, we have always acted out of love for our country and I think even though there may be differences of opinion or position, I also think the Chinese government believes we are sincere in loving our country and so, I think there is a good foundation for improvement."
