LETTERKENNY, Ireland, JAN. 23, 2006 (Zenit.org).- A bishop has insisted publicly that cohabiting couples must not receive Communion.
Bishop Philip Boyce of Raphoe delivered that message in a homily at St. Eunan's Cathedral in Letterkenny, County Donegal, last week, according to the Irish Independent.
The 65-year-old prelate based his homily on a scriptural reading which dealt with the Church teaching "that love in marriage was exclusive and indissoluble."
He insisted, however, that unmarried couples should come to church and partake in services.
He said it was up to individuals not to accept Communion but, in some cases, priests might discreetly discuss the subject with the couples.
